A huge part of being a positive parent is the words that we choose to say to our children.
We’ve all heard the old rhyme: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Whoever wrote that was no doubt sincere, and was probably trying to help a child get over something nasty that was said to them.
The problem is … it’s just not true. Words will never hurt me? Words DO hurt. Often deeply. Sometimes lastingly.
So, positive parents are very mindful of this, and will certainly avoid speaking to their children in ways that wound or discourage.
But that’s just a first step. That’s the “what NOT to do”. Parents need to go further and proactively say the things that will build their child’s sense of being loved and valued. There’s perhaps nothing that will have a greater impact on a person’s self-esteem and confidence later in life.
We’ve compiled a (shareable) slide show of 25 simple loving words of affirmation you should say to your child regularly. Enjoy! …
I love this list because it goes beyond the things we usually say. If our kids only hear us express our love the same way each time, it may start to become “white noise”. It’s just something we say. But when we have obviously put some thought into our words, and affirm them in lots of different and specific ways, it’s far more powerful.
A Challenge for Positive Parents
Okay, so we want to put out a challenge for you to do something practical starting today.
Some experts say that it takes around 21 days to form a new habit. So why not download our slide show to your PC or device, and work your way through it saying one of the positive affirmations to your child every day. That will take you a little more than 21 days, and so you should form a wonderful new habit.
When you get to the end of the 25 days, you can either go back and start the slide show over, OR (better still) sit down with a cup of your favorite beverage and write your own list of ADDITIONAL positive, loving words. If you do that, come back and share it with us. We’d love to see what you’ve come up with!
