You’ve managed to protect a clear night on the calendar for both of you. (A small miracle) You’ve picked out a romantic little restaurant you’ve both been dying to check out. Date night! One last hurdle … a babysitter. A friend tells you that their little sister would be perfect and would love to do it. Leaving you with just one question: “What’s the going rate for babysitting these days?”
That’s like asking “how long is a piece of string”, right? If you ask 5 people the going rate for babysitting, you’ll get 6 opinions.
Well, thankfully, there is some actual research on this …

Okay, from the numbers we can identify several factors that influence the cost of babysitting, and that should help you arrive at a fair price …
4 Factors that Affect the Going Rate for Babysitting
- Where you live. It tracks along with salaries and the cost of living in your neck of the woods. So, urban areas will generally pay higher rates than rural areas, and northeastern and westcoast states will pay higher rates than down south.
- The babysitter’s experience and training. Your friend’s 16 year old kid sister looking for her first gig should be considerably cheaper than a college senior who’s been doing it for 5 years, and has a current CPR certification.
- What do you want the babysitter to do? You can pay less if you’re happy for them to put your toddler to bed early, and then they are free to study or watch TV. But if your child needs homework help, or they’ve agreed to clan the kitchen, you’ll pay more.
- It pays to plan ahead. If you call a sitter at the last minute, expect to pay a premium. Book ahead to get the best going rate for babysitting.
But best of all, when you’re searching for a sitter on the Care4Hire site, you can read profiles detailing each candidate’s qualifications and experience, and instantly access online references and background checks. Peace of mind!
